Shaw was a centre back, who could play also as wing-half − his main position until half 1950s. A one-club man, he's Sheffield United's player with most appearances, 714 from 1945 to 1966. It's the actual and probably unbeatable record. He scored 8 goals for "the Blades". A fan favourite, he's regarded as one of the greatest centre-halves never to be capped for England.
Shaw was a hard-working player, who showed his abilities week after week. He was the calm pivot of Sheffield United's defensive system in the 1950s and 1960s. He was short and not too strong but gifted with superb timing of interception, astute sense of position, the ability to read the game, was decent in the air and could use the ball. He was the reliable main defender covering the area in front of his goal. Clever, competitive and efficient, he regularly mopped up the opposing attacks before his goal was in danger. He was fast, especially over short distances, and agile enough to recover if an opponent temporarily went past him. Not a great passer, he wasn't too ambitious with the distribution, preferring the short pass even during his wing-half days, when he needed a wider range to distribute the ball. As defender then he had more brain than most of the centre forwards he faced, outsmarting many of them, making them look dumb and slow. It's worthy of mention that he could count on the help of the great sweeper-goalkeeper Alan Hodgkinson, who covered most ground than most goalkeepers.
