Pace was a centre and inside forward. His career began in 1950 at Aston Villa, where he scored 42 goals in 106 matches from 1950 to 1957, playing mainly as inside forward. He joined in 1957 Sheffield United, where he scored 175 times in 302 until he left in 1964. He retired in 1966 after short spells at Notts County and Walsall.
Pace was a tough and strong striker despite lacking of a great physique. More effective as centre forward, he was a superb header, gifted with outstanding timing of anticipation. Capable with both feet, he could shoot quickly and accurately. A very consistent scorer, he was Sheffield United's top scorer for seven consecutive seasons. Also unselfish, he could provide assists, preferring a short pass towards a near teammate instead of trying to dribble an opponent in a 1-on-1 situation.
