Charlie Aitken was known for his great speed and loyalty to Villa, starting in the First Division, going all the way down to the Third Division, and then all the way back up to the First Divison again. He was an athletic full back, quick and with a good leap, with attacking tendencies, using his pace and decent crossing ability to help out at the other end of the pitch. He also had good tackling skills, good at cleanly taking the ball of the opposition, although his positioning wasn't as good and he was sometimes caught watching the ball instead of the attackers. He played in three League Cup finals, winning one of them, even playing in one while in the Third Division. He could have easily stayed in the First Division after Villa's relegation but decided to stay at the club, eventually leaving in 1976 to New York Cosmos where he played alongside legendary players such as Pelé, Beckenbauer and Carlos Alberto. He was one of many Scottish players that had successful careers in England yet never played for Scotland. |
