Barontini is a former defensive midfielder who could also play as centre-back, side-back, inside and even winger out of necessity. After starting his career at Solvay Rosignano in 1959, he signed for Pisa one year later, where he played until his retirement in 1974, making 330 appearances and scoring 19 goals.
A very versatile player, Barontini could fulfill different tasks with the same efficiency. While his main job was marking the opposing playmaker, he could also push forward and attempt the shot on goal with either foot. Although his shots didn't have much power, they could still give goalkeepers a hard time. Barontini was also a solid header. From a defensive standpoint, he protected the back-line well. However, he had troubles against fast players who would challenge him with dribbling skills.
