Gatto was a player who covered positions in every zone of the field, except goalkeeper. He's considered one of the most important players in the history of Reggina. Initially, he played as centre forward. Then he played also in the midfield as central or defensive midfielder and eventually in defence as sweeper. He played only for Reggina, scoring 48 goals in 361 matches from 1952 to 1966, having the chance to play a few games his first and only Serie B season after a whole career in Serie C and Fourth Division. He's the longest serving captain with seven seasons wearing the armband and he's the record-man for appearances.
Gatto's very good offensive prowess made him effective in attack even when he didn't play as forward, thanks also to his good technical and athletic qualities.
