Bertie was a very complete player who matched guile and vision with tenacity and sheer ruthlessness. He was equally as likely to defeat his opponents with a quick turn and a perfect through ball as he was to beat them with his ferocious, often dirty tackles. Auld and Murdoch made a formidable 2-man central midfield for Celtic that was amongst the best in the world at the time, complimenting each other perfectly, Auld's hard running making up for Murdoch's lack of mobility, and Murdoch's calming demeanour balancing out Auld's more manic approach to the game. Auld was also a good scorer, scoring just under a goal every 3 games from midfield. He had 2 separate stints at Celtic, leaving for Birmingham as a fiery young outside left, before returning a more mature, refined midfield playmaker. He also had a good understanding with left back Tommy Gemmell, Auld's lovely threaded through balls often putting Gemmell free behind the opposition defence to cross into the box. He was absolutely tough as nails and stories of his hardness are legendary, among them headbutting Liverpool giant Ron Yeats despite being a good half a foot shorter than him, breaking the legs of two different players in one week, and having his collarbone broken by Nobby Stiles, only to refuse to be substituted, tackling Stiles so hard he had to be stretchered off, and only then did Auld come off for treatment. Despite being the complete package as a midfielder, he only got a modest 3 caps for Scotland as a 21 year old, the SFA apparently not a fan of his hard man antics on the field (including knocking out England captain Johnny Haynes with a left hook). His wit and sense of humour has helped him remain one of the most beloved figures in Celtic history. A true legend of the club. |
