McDonald was a fantastic goalkeeper but unfortunately he had a very short career, he made his debut in the top league at age 23 and played his last game at age 28 in 1959, forced to retire after a broken leg. He had actually broke his leg before too in 1956. Without these injuries he would have surely become one of England's legendary goalkeepers. McDonald was very secure on his line, always well positioned, with excellent reflexes in 1-on-1 situations and from long range shots. He wasn't so good at handling crosses, but he was reliable at catching shots. His performances at the 1958 World Cup were outstanding enough that he was even voted 11th in the Ballon d'Or that year. Tragically he had to watch from the sidelines as his teammates won the league the season after his career-ending injury happened, but he's usually considered the best goalkeeper in Burnley's history for his exceptional ability. As of this moment he's also England's oldest living international player.
