Considered by some to be the best ever West Brom player. Barlow was an attacking left half known for his excellent playmaking and footballing intelligence, arguably the key player in West Brom's "Team of the Century" that won the FA Cup and came close to winning the double. He was a footballing metronome that kept play ticking, and his slick passing was central to Vic Buckingham's forward thinking, continental-style team. Tall and powerfully built, he was a very slow player but could power through the midfield with the ball, driving play forward, or unlock a defence with a quick one-two pass. His driving runs were hard to stop, he would simply brush off players that tried to tackle him, and he also had good close control which combined with his strength made him even very hard to dispossess when he was standing still. He started his career at the inside left position and also played at centre forward, before moving back into the half back positions permanently, although he still played at the forward positions if necessary because of his natural strength, powerful shot and eye for goal. He wasn't so good at defending as other half backs which led to him only earning a single England cap due to the incredible consistency and defensive solidarity of Jimmy Dickinson. He was also pretty weak in the air for a man of his height, and his lack of pace meant he couldn't keep up with the game very well when his team didn't have the ball. Regardless he was a unique player in English football at the time, and the great Bobby Moore himself said he modeled his game after Barlow. He was the last surviving member of the "Team of the Century" and died in 2012.
