Doug Holden is a Bolton Wanderers legend who played for them in two FA Cup finals and appeared in over 400 games. He was a winger who played equally well on both sides, and was something of a strange player for the 1950s as he wasn't particularly quick or known for scoring goals, and wasn't a traditional English winger who would just beat his man at speed and cross the ball. Instead, Holden was an intricate, technical player with excellent passing and playmaking skills, almost more like an inside forward playing on the wing. When playing on the right wing he had lovely, pinpoint crosses and when playing on the left he would play lower passes through the middle of the pitch more often. He played deeper on the pitch than a lot of wingers back then, sending longer passes forward for Lofthouse to run the channels and hold the ball up. Despite his slight frame, he was fairly strong and could hold off players while weaving through them with his great close control. He was a very elegant dribbler and rarely lost the ball, always knowing when to release the ball instead of taking on another player. He always had his head up, a very intelligent winger, and even helped in defence sometimes. He played in 5 games for England, and grabbed two assists in the 1953 FA Cup final as part of the losing team in the famous "Matthews Final".
