Defence MindedINFO:Finlayson was a goalkeeper, considered one of the best in Wolverhampton Wanderers history and Bert Williams natural successor. He played 203 matches for the Wolves from 1956 to 1964. Before joining Wolverhampton, he played 251 games for Millwall from 1948 to 1956.
Finlayson was a tall goalkeeper who used his height to advantage when jumping high corners but was also brave in 1-on-1 situations to stop the opposing forward. Very commanding in action, he was probably the most fearless goalkeeper in the history of Wolverhampton. A confident and intelligent man who spread tenacity throughout his team, he was even compared to Peter Schmeichel on that matter decades later. He wasn't as acrobatic and agile as Williams but he was equally effective and quickly became a fan favourite. He was very astute at positioning, shouted loud to organise the defence and could deliver very good long-raking towering punts to turn defence to immediate attack. It's a mystery why he never capped for Scotland but, unfortunately, Tottenham Hotspur's Bill Brown was an irreplaceable first choice in the national team and other than him there were also George Farm, Frank Haffey and Lawrie Lesley.
