Defence MindedINFO:Debattista was a right-back He spent his entire career for Floriana, playing 211 matches from 1947 to 1967, leading to theam to win seven times the Premier League and nine times the FA Cup, most of them as captain. He was the first to be awarded as Maltese player of the year in 1955. He rarely missed games and always due to occasional injuries. He had only a bad one that forced him out for almost a whole season in 1965-66, when he was at the end of his career. He capped several times for Malta FA XI and 3 times for the official Malta national team.
Not very tall but gifted with a well-built physique, Debattista was considered as a great defender and true gentleman. He was the first choice right-back for both Floriana and Malta, though he was used as number 3 during a UEFA Euro 1964 qualifying match lost 6-1 against Denmark in 1962.
In a match against Hibernians in 1951, he was playing as right centre back since side backs weren't very common yet. He proved, alongside his teammate Dalli, to be an effective defender since both controlled perfectly the situation in defence. He didn't have the same ability though in a match with Malta XI against Brazil in 1954 because he had troubles mainly against Arlindo, who scored at some point after dribbling the entire Malta's three men defence, including Debattista.
Malta FA XI faced Catania twice in 1955. During the second encounter, Debattista scored the winning penalty after barely failing a first one, which was rebound by Charles Azzopardi. The match ended 3-2 and the team revenged the 2-1 loss earlier that year.
The defender probably possessed an insidiuos shot a part of being a penalty taker: during a match against Southend United in 1955, he scored incredibly from his own half with a long ball that went high before going straight towards and inside the opposing goal.
In a match lost 2-0 against Valletta on February 1965, Debattista showed good reaction when he saved on the line a shot directed on goal.
