Authoritative, tough and cool-headed, he quickly became a terrace favorite at St James’ Park, earning the nickname “Rock of Tyneside”.
At 6’3” and 14 stone, Brennan was speedy for a big man, and often came out on top in his battles with big-name centre-forwards of the era like Tommy Lawton, Stan Mortensen, Nat Lofthouse, Trevor Ford.
