Bretti was a right-winger and centre forward. He spent the majority of his career at Bari, playing there from 1950 to 1952 and from 1953 to 1958, making 208 appearances and scoring 69 goals. He was the team captain in his last few seasons. He played also for Arsenaltaranto, Livorno, Pisa and Triestina, retiring in 1962.
One of Bari's top scorer, Bretti led his team to a Serie A promotion in 1957-58 with his goals. The reports of the time display his instinct and positional sense inside the box as he always took advantage of any space left free by the opposition's defenders and usually tapped every ball he received in the net. He possessed solid dribbling and the ability to set up the offensive play. In fact, he was a good assist-man, especially from corner kick.
