INFO:
Wood was a goalkeeper. His career started at Darlington in 1949. The same year, he transferred to Manchester United where he had his best years, making 208 appearances before leaving in 1958. He then spent seven seasons at Huddersfield Town, playing more than 250 matches. He also played for Bradford City and Barnsley where he retired in 1968. He capped for England 3 times.
Considered one of the best goalkeepers in England at his time, he was also the fastest despite the fact that he was a smoker. His tendency to show his speed even outside of the penalty area earned him comparisons to a sprinter. The combination of courage, agility, excellent speed, reflexes, and ability to stop shots and headers, made him particularly effective on his line. He unfortunately had a psychological decline following an assault by Aston Villa forward Peter McParlane during the 1956-57 FA Cup final that resulted in a fractured cheekbone. In particular, he started showing a big weakness against crosses which he always had troubles with anyways.
