Jupp Röhrig was inside left, left wing half and centre half with brillant strategic and playmaking capacities. Player of great technique, agile, the artist on ball with great passing range especially for Hans Schafer with whom he made fantastic partnership on the left side of the Koln attack. Jupp was great team worker but had constant muscular problems and the injuries forced him to skip many important games. Due to the war his career as a senior footballer only started at age 25 in 1950, Röhrig was known as a very versatile player with an exceptional technique and high intelligence. Röhrig was one of the outstanding players of Köln during the 1950s, especially Hans Schäfer on the left wing benefitted enormously from Röhrig’s service. Hans Schäfer later said: “without Jupp Röhrig I would never have become the player I became.” Often compared to Fritz Walter in his style, Röhrig’s international career was somewhat lacking due to Fritz Walter reigning supremely in his position and also because he was quite injury-prone. Röhrig had made the squad for the 1954 World Cup but had to leave the team after a rupture of his Achilles tendon shortly before the start put him out for months. Roehrig ("I always had an aversion to drunks") was footballer and gentleman, fair play, his maxim. He was never sent off. He directed the Cologne masterfully to the national finals in 1960, the lose the Billy Goats in Frankfurt Forest Stadium unhappy with 2:3 against Hamburger SV. For his club he was also a valuable career after the man he served for many years the FC as an amateur and youth coach.
