INFOWalter Schleger was very fast striker who was sometimes used even as defender on the left side, most notably in WC '54 semifinal. He was tricky player, gifted technically, combined with his dangerous sprints on the flank made a extremly useful mixture. That can be seen in the fact he was called to FIFA selection which was the greatest honour at the time, but in the NT didn't play too much because of enormous number of great strikers in his time. Walter Schleger began playing football in the youth team Sparta Prague before he came to Vienna. His first game in the championship from the striker completed in 1949 for the Wiener Sport-Club. He left the Dornbacher soon moved to Vienna and Austria in 1951, where he remained until the end of his career. He made his debut as a newly minted Austrian also on 23 September 1951 for the Austrian national football team in the match against Germany. After Walter Schleger wins in 1953 with the violets of the championship, he took part in 1954 with the national team at the soccer World Cup in Switzerland. Walter Schleger comes in the first game of the World Cup in a 1-0 victory over Scotland to use but it needs to make in the following games with Robert Service and his club colleague Ernst Stojaspal Turl Wagner place by storm. The Austrian team reach the semifinals, in which in turn may play Walter Schleger. However, he does so as a defender, because the stop is a trained striker Helmut Rahn. Austria Germany subject, but proposes to place in the small final to date, the three reigning world champions Uruguay. 1958, Walter topper in part a second time with the national team at a world championship. In Sweden, the Austrians fail, however, already in the group stage, where they had drawn with Brazil, England and the Soviet Union, an especially difficult lot. At the end of his football career wins Walter Schleger three championships with the Austria en suite (1961, 1962, 1963) and can also celebrate many successes in the Cup. After ending his football career turned to the doctor of veterinary medicine and eventually became the kennel club as Univ.-Prof. Dr. Walter Schleger and Chairman of the Institute for Animal Breeding and Genetics, Veterinary University of Vienna on one of the leading authorities in this field.
