Horst Eckel was very versatile player who played on various positions. He was tireless runner with exceptional agility and tactical awareness. He had excellent understanding with teammates, especially Fritz Walter. Eckel was also good passer and very useful in marking the opponents, very adroit and clinical, had also solid strength despite the lanky stature. Eckel played as a teenager for the SC Vogelbach. Early age of 15 he first played for the first team Vogelbach. The longest period (1949-1960) he was the first FC Kaiserslautern active and then from 1960 to 1966 for the SV Röchling Völklingen on the ball, he was with Kaiserslautern in 1951 and 1953 German Champion. For the German national team, he played in the period 1952-1958 as a right wing half 38 international games. His testimonial match was held on 14 April 1969 in Braunschweig. He was thus the one player in the world championship team of 1954 that his career ended at the latest. Eckel acted in Vogelbach and, initially, in Kaiserslautern very successful at the center forward position. He was quick and was clarified and a goal threat. Allegedly at the instigation of national coach Sepp Herberger Eckel was transferred to the external rotor position and it paid off at the World Cup 1954th Eckel was indispensable for Fritz Walter, because it understood both on the court as it were blind.
