INFORoberto Lovati, known as ‘Bob’, had a huge physique and was mostly known for his excursions outside the poles to punch the ball before it arrives on the heads of his adversaries and for his flying saves from one side of the goal to the other. Besides Bob had great sense of positioning and carisma, knew to command the back line. His only weakness were ground shots since he was sometimes slow to come down due to his giant size. Lovati was born on the 20 July 1927 at Cusano Milanino in the Milan Province and started playing as a goalkeeper with the amateur teams of US Gerli and Monsummano in the Serie C. In the 1947/48 season he registered with Pisa, with whom he made his debut the next season in the Serie B. After playing 59 league games, in 1952/53 Lovati passed to another Serie B team, Monza where he stayed for two seasons, totaling 68 league games. In the 1954/55 season he made his debut in the Serie A when he played with Torino (33 league games). He passed to Lazio in the next season (1955/56) where he remained till the end of his career in 1960/61, totaling 135 league games in six seasons and winning the Coppa Italia in 1958. But Lovati was unlucky in his Azzurro career, playing only two games. He was called up by National Coach Alfredo Foni and the Technical Commission and made his debut with the Italian National team on the 25 April 1957, 30 years of age, in Rome when the Azzurri won 1-0 against Northern Ireland in the qualification match for the 1958 World Cup. Lovati played also the next Azzurro match, in Zagreb against Yugoslavia on the 12 May 1957, a game of the 6th edition of the Coppa Internazionale. The result was a disaster and the Italian National Team lost 1-6 and Lovati lost his place in Azzurro. Immediately he retired from his playing career in 1961, Lovati became an all-rounder with the Lazio club and until his total retirement from football in 1985, he had covered various positions within the club, including Goalkeeper Coach, Youngsters Coach, Scout, Chief Observer, Official, Sports Director, Coach of the Reserve Team (winning the 1970/71 Reserve League – Campionato De Martino), Assistant Coach and even Coach of the first team. As Coach he led Lazio in 110 games between Italian League, Coppa Italia and Coppa delle Alpi which he won as coach in 1971.
