INFO

Mario Bergamaschi was right wing half and sweeper. Mario was strong and determined player in charge of marking dangerous centre forwards and later in Milan started to play as libero behind the defence. His only task was to recover balls, he was great marker and good tackler with lot of running. He was little bit weak technically and sometimes used to make some errors in passing but on the other side commanded well the back line with his determination and commitment. In the 50's Bergamaschi won two league titles with AC Milan and was finalist in the Champions League when Milan lost to Real Madrid. Later he moved to Sampdoria and will become crucial part in defense of team that will come in fourth place in the historic 1960-61 season, the best position reached by Sampdoria in the league until the eighties. He racked up five appearances for the senior national team, the first three during the militancy in Milan between 1954 and 1955, the last two in 1958 after moving to Sampdoria. With 394 appearances in the top division is among the top 50 players in the rankings of all time number of appearances in the Italian league. He said that during his stay Milani (1957, title) used to take a centimeter, a dose that doping had borrowed the name from the size of the liquid contents of the syringe. Bergamaschi left a great mark in both Milan and Sampdoria history with his humble behaviour and quality on the football pitch.
