INFO

Adriano Bassetto was Italian version of Hector Scarone, one of the best shooters ever and most prolific inside forwards in the history of Serie A, but never had real chance in NT because coaches favoured first Valentino Mazzola and than later Giampiero Boniperti. Bassetto was fantastic shooter and great set piece taker. His shots had strength and precision and that was his main weapon and main source of goals. Perfectly two-footed, he'd score 9 out of 10 free kicks from the edge of the box (16-20 meters) and his teams wanted more to have free kick rather than penalty. Besides he had great technique and good pace, especially his sudden bursts. But he was a bit individualistic and didn't run much in defensive duties. After he made debut with the smaller teams, Bassetto began with the Vicenza in the league of war in 1944. After the end of World War II, with the red and white managed to stay in the top division. In 1946 he passed to the new team of Sampdoria on the September 22 in the match lost 3-1 against Roma, in 55th minute Bassetto was the author of the first official goal in the clubs history. In Sampdoria Bassetto remained for seven seasons, reaching a mark on two occasions more than 20 goals the season. He left Genoa in 1953 after 196 matches and 92 goals and moved to play for Atalanta. In Bergamo, he played four more seasons at the top, playing 125 matches and scoring 56 goals (top scorer in the history of the club in the top flight before he was surpassed in 2008 by Cristiano Doni). In 1957, now thirty-two, he returned to Vicenza, but he however, played only 8 games in the 1957-1958 Serie A scoring single goal, at the domestic success against his former club Atalanta. In 1958 he was hired by the Lucchese in Serie C with whom he played four championships, the last of them in Serie B because of promoting won the previous year. Bassetto played a total of 100 games and scored 28 goals for the club. He closed his career at Cesena in 1963 at the age of 38 years after playing only 2 games in Serie C with the Bianconeri. He was among the highest scorers of Italian football in the premier league he played 329 games with 149 total goal scored in Serie A (which must add up to 26 games and 9 goals in the league of war 1945-1946). After retiring from active playing, he coached in the 1975-1976 season Serie D team Entella Chiavari. On December 5, 1954 Bassetto also debuted in the National Team in the game won 2-0 against Argentina. Adriano Bassetto died on 11/10/1999 aged 74.
