INFO:Payne was a right winger. He spent almost his entire career at Liverpool, making 243 appearances from 1948 to 1956, scoring 43 goals. He retired in 1957 after an unsuccessful one and a half season at Everton. Likened to Stanley Matthews, the comparison with the legendary Stoke City and Blackpool player was, of course, an exaggeration. Initially deployed as inside left in the 1951-52 season, Payne wasn't suited for this position. In fact, he couldn't act as box-to-box player due to his lack of stamina, contrary to the chances to take breathers that he had when hogging the touchline in his winger position. He was a short and tricky winger who enjoyed beating the defenders one by one with his enchanting dribbling, leaving them in a daze. He linked extremely well with inside right Jack Balmer, and cooperated at best with Billy Liddell who played in the opposing flank. Payne was physically brave, tactically intelligent, gifted with good skills on the ball and the instinct for knowing the exact moment to deliver a through pass or a cross. Liverpool's fans turned on him in the latter stage of his career as he lost his form due to fitness problems and injuries.
