Werner Kohlmeyer was legendary German defender, left back of World Cup 1954 winning team. As a player he was very reliable and confident, strong in duels, excellent in aerial battles and very fair and fast player, as well as very endurable footballer. He even had some offensive runs and scored few important goals for his club. A man of amazing physicall atributes: Kohlmeyer run 100 meters in under 11 seconds, his record in Long Jump was 734 cm and he competed also in pentathlon. He'd usually compete in 3 disciplines on saturday, the rest 2 disciplines on sunday morning and than he would regularly play for K'lautern on sunday afternoon and be the most fresh and mobile player on the pitch. He also played for 1. FC Kaiserslautern from 1941 to 1957. The burly Kohlmeyer became renowned for saves on the goalline, especially in the game against Yugoslavia during the 1954 World Cup, in which he several times none to soon threw himself into shots on the German goal. In the 1954 FIFA World Cup Final, Kohlmeyer stopped Zoltan Czibor and completely escluded him from the game. Kohlmeyer won the German football championship with 1. FC Kaiserslautern in 1951 and 1953. Kohlmeyer remained a starter for Kaiserslautern until 1957. In total he played 332 games and scored 20 goals for Kaiserslautern and 22 games with NT. After his retirement he started to experience some family problems which resulted in end of his marriage. Unfortunately that proved too fatal for Kohlmeyer since he sunk into alcoholism and eventually died in 1974 due to heart failure, as the first of "Heroes of Bern".
