Berni was offensive allrounder, mainly the winger but he played in the middle as well, helping in creating the attacks thanks to his great stamina, speed, good technique, teamworking and crosses. He was very agile player, capable of producing excellent crosses while in full speed, had good dribbling, pace and even scored some goals with his head. Berni was good scorer as well, scoring more than 150 goals in career. Due to the war made his debut on 14 March 1943 in the Gauligaelf of Schalke with a 10:1 win against VfL Bochum.
