INFO:

Claude Abbes was born May 24, 1927 at The Caumette in Herault. He signed her first licensing footballer in villages near Beziers as Bédarieux and Lobastide. Great for time, 1.80 m for 80 kg, it is fast becoming the difficult position of goalie. He is clever enough to get noticed and it integrates naturally ranks of Béziers in 1951, the club's most exclusive region. There remains only one season because he was contacted by emissaries Etienne seeking a guardian to stabilize the defense first team in trouble in the first division.
Indeed, in the heart of the season 1952-53, at the end of the first leg, ASSE has a lackluster 18th and last place overall. The situation is serious and with ten defeats in 17 days, the defense that conceded 42 goals or 10 more than its closest competitor FC Nancy, is blamed. John Snell, who wants to set up attacking football based on speed of execution and total availability of all players on the field, is unable to effectively coordinate its rear. It lacks a boss that is not Jacques Ferrière and Michel Jacquin, the usual holders in cages ASSE.
It therefore instructs Peter Garonnaire him find a gem that can restore order in the penalty area. It is therefore more a part of recruiting young, talented and upcoming but to achieve the transfer of an experienced player who would fill a glaring lack in the group as Etienne football school failed internal to train. In this exercise, Garonnaire is also very good as he'll prove it with one of his first transfers to feel it will lead to the end.

Claude Abbes therefore accepts the proposal of AS Saint-Etienne and he played his first official meeting December 28, 1952 in Reims as part of the 18th day of the championship, the first leg matches. We could dream of a better baptism of fire for the new arrival is placed immediately in the thick of it. Reims is the undisputed leader and the best attack with 46 goals scored. Besides, Geoffroy Guichard, the first leg, the team of Albert Batteux imposed a real correction to the men of John Snella registering no less than 6 goals for a clearcut victory (6-2). The gossips leave and cast doubt on the outcome of the meeting, the extent of the score being the only unknown in this confrontation.
If the ASSE is finally beaten 2-0 on a goal by playmaker, Kopa, and following a penalty converted by Glovacki, the rout was not supposed to be. Instead, the metamorphosis seems to have committed and it is confirmed in matches where the Greens will return bow more than 4 times including two in the last three days when the maintenance was virtually assured. A drifting for much of the season, the turnaround is dramatic and suggests tomorrow enchanting. The machine, which could bind permanently, has now been launched on track and Saint-Etienne received his first title, the Coupe Drago in 1955 and then won the championship of France in 1957 and competed in her first meetings of the European Cup the next season to face Glasgow Rangers and all this with a Claude Abbes summit of his art.

Always friendly, smiling and beyond his habit of always wearing sweaters when he played, he brought a breath of fresh air in the French league because he was not as bright on his line that could the be a Frenchman or Replace René Vignal, they were significantly higher in areas uncommon for the time. Indeed, with the offensive tactics advocated by John Snell, he turned into a keeper-sweeper far ahead of his contemporaries characterized by an authority without faults on the outputs in the legs and the ball flight or safety of performance did wonders. These unusual qualities have obviously attracted the attention of breeders who appealed to him. He knows his international debut 27 October 1957 against Belgium where he shows all his class to France, thanks to a draw to qualify for the finals of the World Cup. It is again requested a month later against England at Wembley with two new abled Etienne, Richard Tylinski and Rene Domingo. Seriously injured kidneys, it can not prevent the defeat in British soil (0-4).

Replace with Francis, they shared the starting spot in the France team and this is the beginning Strasbourgeois World Cup 58 in Sweden playing the first two matches of the competition. As in 1954 in Switzerland, he is condemned to the substitute bench. But after the defeat against Yugoslavia, the duo Batteux-Snell, formed to lead the team of France, uses its services to compete against the party capital of Scotland. With its 2-1 victory, she qualified for the quarterfinals and is now the Saint-Etienne which is biased to this fabulous semi-final against Brazil. Diminished by the injury Jonquet, forced to leave his partner, he can do nothing to counter the festival a great beginner called Pele completes a hat-trick. Nevertheless, beating Germany for the 3rd place, France managed a performance on which it has been heavily involved and will long remain a reference.

Following the career of Claude Abbes is affected by the results sawtooth AS Saint-Etienne. It is part of the group that won the Coupe de France in 1962 but he can not avoid the season ends with a descent to the second division. He left and the Drill and undertakes to complete his engineering studies that led him to an important position Pierrelatte CEA from 1962 to 1970. At the same time, he became player-coach of Montelimar propels it up the second division. He later held the post of sporting director with the club more or less successfully. Only when he retired he returned to Saint-Etienne Rocher where Roger gives it a position on the board of the ASSE. He left when the case of the "slush fund" out of loyalty to his president ever.

Claude Abbes is the archetype of the modern goalkeeper allowed AS Saint-Etienne take a further step, one that led to the consecration. We can say without too many mistakes that it belongs to the family of legendary goals of the Green family as Pierre Bernard, Georges Carnus, Ivan Curkovic or Jean Castaneda.
