Rie also competed in Kaatsen. As a goalkeeper he had an excellent line-up in the goal, which made him keep well preventive. But he could also rant spectacularly if he had to. Meert was also known for his high jumps, although he was not very tall. He had very good timing. He just jumped up at the right time. Very well prepared, with good positioning and excellent jump, he was good at saving penalties and had very precise dropshots. Meert was therefore under Anderlecht for the first time in the 1942-1943 season and only said goodbye in 1960, after eighteen years in the first team. He was 39 years old at the time. At Anderlecht he scored 325 games and scored one goal (a penalty on the 28th matchday in the 1954-'55 season at home against RC Mechelen). The Brussels goalkeeper also belonged to the selections for the national team 48 times and thereby captured 33 caps. He made his debut in December 1944 in a 3-1 loss against France. He played his last international match in March 1957. Belgium then went 0-5 against Alfredo Di Stefano's Spain. With the national team, he kept his nets intact throughout the year 1948-49.
