INFO:

Mário is former Benfica defender. He started to play as striker but played in Benfica on all positions in defence as well as the left wing half position. Very tenacious and brave, strong in tackling and with good sense of anticipating, also very strong in jump with fighting spirit and team commitment. After starting up the CUF 15 years (Junior Vice-Champion in the 1st season), heads to light in 1955, at a time when Arsenio was the opposite route. At the end of 62, stood out for its authoritative and decisive intervention in anticipation of the chapter, revealing bright to offset the faster players of Real Madrid. Mario, Medal of Merit Club Light, returned to CUF after consecrate themselves bi-European champion by SLBenfica due to the security of a steady job and is now retired from that institution. He had three caps for Portugal National Team, two of them as a Benfica player, from 2 May 1960, in a 1–5 defeat with Yugoslavia, for European Championship quarter-finals, to the 2–1 win over Belgium, in 3 May 1964, in a friendly match. Mário João was never a full professional and left football, because he earned more money as a worker for CUF then as a football player. In five seasons, leading "a bright light in the soul," won three National, two Cups in Portugal and also scored twice more longed evidence, the European Champion Clubs' Cup. In an orchestra of violins, a trombone was effective and did not even mind being bombo. Wanted to play. With hiperexigência personnel. A bastion at the dedication, on firmness, toughness. Players like him did not diminish the collective before they added new and decisive actions. Stripped sweater gaudy on the first day of July, 1962. At the National Stadium, participated in the triumph over V. Setúbal (3-0) with goals from Eusebio (2) and Cavem. The team twice champion of Europe via the drop cloth, after two years of competitive exuberance. If I could, Mário João continue the crusade, perhaps even play for free, by the grace of Benfica. In 1997 the City Council Barreiro awarded him the prize "Barreiro Recognized" in the area of sport.
