He played as a left winger, sometimes as striker and he is remembered as one of the finest headers and strikers of the ball. He was excellent in hitting a ball with diving header. He was one of those goalscorers that was never happy with a simple tap-in chance, but always strove for the spectacular, and as such was more an individualist than a team player. He is famous for the 1957 FA Cup final in which he shoulder charged Manchester United's keeper Ray Wood (that was a legal move back then) in the opening minutes of the game, and later scoring twice and bring the 7th cup for Villa. He is still top scorer of the Northern Ireland national team in the World Cup finals. All of his goals came in the 1958 WC. He scored 121 goal for the Villans. McParland holds a unique place in English football history as the first player in the game to score in and win both English major domestic knockout Finals, FA and League Cup.
