Too bad that he only remained talented because lung disease prevented him becoming the worldclass player. He was initially a winger, but was capable of playing on every position in forward line. He mostly took the ball inside and went for a goalscoring opportunity, rather than delivering a cross, although he wasn't bad in that aspect at all which reflects in his duties of taking corners. His greatest asset was his amazing ability for that era to dribble in full speed, and he did it with such elegance and agility that he was named "Blond Gyroscope". He was also an excellent scorer, ability that is often overshadowed in texts about him because of his dribbling ability. For Partizan, he played in 194 games and scored amazing 203 goals. He was adept at scoring headers and also shooting with his both feet. He always wanted to create a spectacle, from time to time he dribbled unnecessarily even though he had better options. He was the top scorer of the first ever European Cup with 8 goals on 4 games. That score would have been even better if his two regular goal weren't denied by the referee in game against Real. It will be remembered that Santiago Bernabéu offered him blanco check just to sign for Real Madrid... |
