Colombo was a left-half. He spent most of his career at Juventus, making 193 appearances from 1954 to 1961, scoring 24 goals. Also, he had a good experience at Atalanta from 1961 to 1966, playing 151 games and scoring 3 times. He played also for Monza and Hellas Verona, where he retired in 1967. He capped for Italy 3 times.
Despite filling a defensive role, Colombo was a very offensive player, capable of rushing towards the opposing box and shooting with good accuracy. He didn't have great technique but had superb tactical awareness and dynamism thanks to which he recovered many balls and then set up the offense with simple but effective passes. Regarding his defensive duties, he provided quantity and controlled the midfield with strength and running ability. In an interview, Colombo compared himself to Claudio Marchisio even though he was slower than the latter but still in possession of a good stride and great heading ability − he also had a good jump.
