Roel Wiersma was a Dutch footballer who played as full-back. Like a man from beginning of the century, one of the better footballer backgrounds who not only played football, but also played cricket and tennis. Wiersma is a rock in the surf, fantastic tackler, an unyielding defender and a good header. A technically not very gifted defender, who more than compensated for that deficiency with a very strong condition and a never-ending willpower. He was known to be a powerful, physical defender with great stamina. Wiersma usually played a rough but fair game. He was lacking in technical abilities, but he was strong in the air. Wiersma commented about his own game in 1962: “I am a player with very average technical skills. I could only manage so many years at this level because of my combativeness and because apparently, there are no better defenders around.” Qualities that would later earn him the captaincy of the national side and allowed him to enjoy string of 35 consecutive matches played without interuption. He does experience good times at PSV and is known as a player with great strength, an iron condition and a strong fighting spirit, and also excellent sliding. He played 53 times for Netherlands national football team between 1954 to 1962.
