INFO:

Taavi Aulis Rytkönen (born 5 January 1929) is a Finnish football Legend. He was known for his technique, vision, agility, speed, passing skills and dribbling ability. Is undoubtedly skillful and fine. The ease in dribbling and feinting is amazing. Of unfailing modesty, has no other defect than his fragility. Rytkönen was a technical player, not so much a power player. According to Rytkönen, he preferred to play in the place of the midfielder, but during his career he went to play all the roles of the forward. In France, Rytkö was nicknamed Monsieur Magic because of his good technique and imaginative playing style. Rytkönen valued skilled passers and considered passing more important than scoring. Indeed, his motto was that “a good player makes a sidemate shine”. At the same time, however, he emphasized the solutions of individuals and reminded that each player must be developed individually.

In his coaching, Rytkönen applied the doctrines he had learned during his professional years in France. As a coach, he represented an offensive winning game that would also entertain the audience. Tactically, Rytkönen brought many new elements to HJK's game that were still unknown in the 1950s. He improved the tactical cooperation of the players and introduced full-field pressing and rounds. HJK's training became more professional under Rytkönen's leadership. He brought more and more exercises related to muscle fitness, which were not done on the same scale in Finland at the time. For example, no pounds were used in the exercises. According to Rytkönen, the pace of play in Finland was lower than in continental games, and for this reason he invested especially in speed-related exercises. Rytkönen also practiced special situations much more and more systematically than before. At the end of the rehearsals, he no longer just played for fun, but he constantly controlled the game and often interrupted it to give players feedback.

He became the country first professional player when he signed for Toulouse in 1952. In total Rytkönen spent eight seasons (1952-1960) in France, winning the French Cup in 1957. A forward he started his career in Finland with KUPs Kuopio in 1945,and after returning from France he worked as player-coach of HJK Helsinki in 1960-1966 and as coach in 1967-1971. Rytkönen earned 37 caps for Finland and scoring 7 goals. He played for Finland at the 1952 Summer Olympics in Helsinki. He also worked as National coach from 1975-1978. He was chosen Finland Player of the Year in 1949, 1950, 1952.
