In addition to his 10 caps for the Hungarian national team, he also played five games with the Hungarian Olympic team. He belonged to the squad for the Olympic Games in 1960 in Rome where Hungary finished third and he played five times. Várhidi was captain of the team. At club level, he played his entire career with Újpesti Dózsa, with whom he was Hungarian champion in 1960. He played 285 league games in which he scored 32 goals (and that for a defender). Pál had as a defender very good cross, a perfect heading and was blessed with excellent technique. The opponent was literally terrified of him when he began to raid forward. He was good penalty taker.
