INFO:Jones was a centre-half and right-back, although he was deployed at least once in most outfield position. He spent his entire career at Liverpool, making 277 appearances from 1946 to 1954 ─ he played some more games during wartime ─ scoring 17 goals. He capped for England twice in 1950. Regarded as one of the best centre halves in Liverpool's history, Jones was a well-built defensive player, who didn’t talk much and never took the spotlight, although he could steal the show with his feared deadly tackles. He was in a class of his own as he was distinguished for consistency, good heading, the ability to build up the offense, a thoughtful and no rush play. He could distribute the ball, occasionally sending good crosses from the side, sometimes using the outside of the foot. He was an even better scorer despite his defensive role as he frequently pushed forward, showing good ability in stopping the ball, scoring first time, once even surprising the goalkeeper with a lob. His trademark though was his excellent heading skill. He took advantage of his height, strength and elevation to hit accurate headers even when the area was crowded. While he possessed a strong physique, he likely wasn't fast. Jones himself pointed out in an interview from the 1990s that his grandson Rob Jones ─ also a former Liverpool defender ─ was a better and a lot faster player than he was.
