INFO:Stubbins was a centre forward. His career began in 1937 at Newcastle United, playing 27 official games, scoring 5 goals, although he scored 188 times in 231 matches considering also wartime. In 1946, he transferred to Liverpool, where he made 178 appearances, scoring 83 goals, 54 of which between 1946 and 1948. He left the team in 1953, and retired on year later after a season at Ashington.
One of the most popular players among Liverpool’s fans in the post Second World War period, Stubbins was a highly prolific scorer, gifted with an accurate shot in both feet. Skilled, clever, capable of trapping the ball, some compared his technique to noneother than that of Arsenal legend Alex James. On top of that, he was a brave, fast, alert, and a good worker who possessed a tall, well-built, powerful physique, and the ideal temperament of a leader, given that he could take care of himself as much as he could hold the forward line together. One of his trademarks may have been his excellent heading ability. In fact, his most memorable goal came in an FA Cup quarter-final match against Birmingham City, when he made a late run to hit a low and fast cross, throwing himself in the air at the ball and sending it past the goalkeeper like a rocket. Unfortunately, Stubbins was injury prone, that being one of the reasons for his departure from the team.
