One of the best ever Scottish wingers, and one of the most important people in Rangers history, as player, coach and director. Willie Waddell was arguably the best player in Scotland in the years just after the war. He was a right winger known for his fantastic crossing ability, speed, strength and powerful shooting with both feet. He was an assist machine and was known for his ability to beat his marker and cross from the goal-line, but also for being able to cut inside and play long passes with his left foot for the onrushing left winger in the box. This two footedness also helped him when shooting as he could curl some lovely shots towards the far corner of the goal while cutting inside with his left foot, as well as being a direct goal threat in behind the opposition. He was quite tall for a winger of that era, and was known for his powerful running and being able to resist physical challenges. He wasn't a dribbling genius like Matthews or Finney but he was very effective and was always an important player for Rangers. Waddell spent his entire career in blue, losing some years to the war but being a regular starter for over 15 years. After retiring he managed Kilmarnock for almost a decade, winning the only league title in their history, and then later joined the team he had spent his entire playing career with. In his time as Rangers manager, he lead them to their greatest triumph, winning the 1972 European Cup Winners Cup. He is also credited with rebuilding the Ibrox Stadium after a disaster in the ground killed 66 fans.
