His career began in 1937 at Bishop Auckland. He transferred to Liverpool two years later. He didn't play too much during wartime, but made 277 appearances from 1946 to 1954, scoring 13 goals. An uncompromsing defensive player, Paisley never gave up until the last second of the match. He was a strong, tough, hard, terrier-like tackler despite his size. He played aggressively but never with malice, although he sometimes hurt his opponent or himself. He recovered a huge amount of balls so that the centre half could play them. Moreover, he was specialised in long throw-ins as he could send the ball from the touchline to the post after striding a few inches. To confirm his fearlessness, he once fell unconscious as a result of a concussion after a terrific shot to the head during a match against Newcastle. Only nine minutes after he had come to, he made a late run to the box to receive a cross and hit a header. Unsurprisingly, he fell unconscious again. He seemingly was quite good in the air as he would use headers also to make clearances. |
