Aston was a left-back deployed as centre forward out of necessity. He spent his entire career at Manchester United, where he made 284 appearances and scored 30 goals from 1946 to 1954. He capped for England 17 times.
After starting his career as inside-right during the war times, he was turned into a left-back. In his defensive role, he proved to be a strong and hard tackler gifted with excellent heading skill, good interception and solid ball winning ability. He had one of his best performances in the 1946-47 FA Cup final against Blackpool as he succesfully marked a legend like Stanley Matthews. Good in the attack as well, Aston proved himself a valuable centre forward whenever he was needed in this position. In the 1950-51 season, for example, he scored 16 goals in 45 matches.
