Cockburn was a left-half. He spent the majority of his career at Manchester United where he made 275 appearances and scored 4 goals from 1946 to 1954. He also played for Bury and Peterborough United among other teams. He retired in 1961. He capped for England 13 times.
Cockburn had a short physique, but he was extremely talented and formidable in the centre of the field. High fitness, consistency, quick legs and mind made up for his lack in size. He was hardworking, resilient, expert in passing and excellent in tackling. Whenever he wasn't winning balls with tackles and sprints to the fullest, he was giving instructions to his teammates. What impressed the most about him though was his excellent heading that was made possible by a combination of exceptional athleticism, almost perfect timing and the ability to jump higher than much taller opponents from a standing position.
