Leopold Gernhardt played as wing half and inside right, although he played on all positions except the left winger, even playing once as a keeper. Gernhardt was tireless runner and strong in physicall duels, but also had good technique and vas useful when playing in attack. He scored solid amount of goals considering the fact he played mostly as wing half. Leopold was solid free kick taker and scored some important goals from the set pieces. His debut in the senior squad, he gave in September 1939. In his first two seasons of the versatile player came to just five appearances, but just slipped into the final round of the German Championship because of an injury of Johann Hofstätter in the first team. Gernhardt denied all further matches of the competition, reaching the Hütteldorfer the final against FC Schalke 04. There he saved the score at 1:3 a ball on the goal line and could finally celebrate with his team a 4-3 victory. He was later the captain and took four more championship before he ended his active career in 1954. Gernhardt debuted in the national team in August 1945 against Hungary. In the summer of 1948 he was part of the squad at the Olympics. Often he was with Hanappi and Ocwirk the number of Austrians runner before he finally completed his last appearances in the national team as a right connector. His last game was a 2-0 victory against Belgium in March 1952. Immediately after the end of his playing career Gernhardt moved to the position of Section Head at Rapid. In the fall of 1955 he finished his career at Rapid. After 1958 he briefly had been coach of SC Wacker Wien, Gernhardt took over the coaching job in September 1960 in Vienna, which he served two seasons long. This was followed by Coach at FC Lustenau 07 in the season and the 1962/63 SK Austria Klagenfurt in the 1963-64 season. In 1965, Gernhardt part of the backroom team of the Austrian FA, where he was responsible for the youth teams and was assistant coach under Leopold Šťastný the national team. Even then he had continued working for the Austrian FA, for example as observers at the World Cup 1978.
