Leopold Gernhardt is former Rapid captain. He played mainly as wing half and inside right, but actually played on all positions except the left winger, even playing once as a keeper. Gernhardt was tireless runner and strong in physicall duels, but also had good technique and vas useful when playing in attack. Never some great scorer but he did score solid amount of goals considering the fact he played mostly as wing half. Leopold was solid free kick taker and scored some important goals from the set pieces. Gernhardt started playing football when ASK Graphia and was taken by his friend Hermann Dvoracek for training the next generation Rapid, where he noticed the coach Leopold Nitsch and soon joined the club. His debut in the senior squad, he gave in September 1939, where he was indebted to the Vienna equal an own goal. In his first two seasons of the versatile player came to just five appearances in the Gaumeisterschaft, but just slipped into the final round of the German Championship because of an injury to the runner-budgetary funds Johann Hofstätter in the first team. In the fall of 1955 he finished his career at Rapid. After 1958 he briefly had been coach of SC Wacker Wien, Gernhardt took over the coaching job in September 1960 in Vienna, which he served two seasons long. This was followed by Coach at FC Lustenau 07 in the season and the 1962/63 SK Austria Klagenfurt in the 1963-64 season. In 1965, Gernhardt part of the backroom team of the Austrian FA, where he was responsible for the youth teams and was assistant coach under Leopold Šťastný the national team. Even then he had continued working for the Austrian FA, for example as observers at the World Cup 1978.
