INFO

Helmut Schön was a German soccer player and the most successful national coach to date. He was very good player, sadly injuries and war prevented him of becoming maybe one of the greatest German strikers. As a player he was most remembered for his spectacular and sharp 20 meters headers. Helmut had very good technique and made lot quick passes and combinations. Not too fast but had very quick turn and shot on small space once he got the ball, he had very strong shot as well. His footballing idol was Matthias Sindelar, he moved to Dresdner SC. After healing his meniscus injury before the 1936 Olympics he was nominated for qualifier November 1937 in Hamburg against Sweden. The debut of Helmut Schön took place in the national team in the "Breslau-Elf", had written with a 8-0 win against Denmark football history. At cost, he contributed with two goals. With his powers of deduction, heading ability, shot power and its strong strategic ability, he seemed to have bright prospects in the national team and to be among the top performers for the upcoming football World Cup 1938 in France. Eight days later, on 28 November 1937, suffered his second meniscus injury and underwent surgery. In 1938/39 followed five more games in the national team, winning the title with the DSC in the Gauliga Saxony and the third rank in the games to the German Football Championship. In the round of the 1939/40 title win was repeated in Saxony. In 16 international matches he scored 17 goals. He retired in 1951 while playing at Hertha BSC Berlin.
