INFOBertus de Harder was a Dutch footballer who played as a striker, according to many, the greatest football artist the Netherlands has ever known. Known as a left winger who drove defenders to despair with his tricks and also scored on the assembly line. He was remembered by his great dribbling, trickery and superb acceleration. 'The Brazilian of the Schilderswijk', as Bertus de Harder was called, was a footballer with a very special technique, for which the public came to the stadiums especially. His limited international career is disproportionate to his abilities due to war, suspension and his choice for professional football. An intelligent left winger with complicated and inimitable passing movements, great speed in the first meters, a measured cross and a good shot in both legs. This stocky winger whose the sudden stops unhorsed his opponents, was known as well as a malicious player on the pitches than as a person with much humor, and courage in life. His career began at age 13 at the Hague Association Transvaal, where he played with his older brother, Karel. In 1949 he moved to Bordeaux. In his first season was "Berthuus" the French champion, not least thanks to the 21 goals of the Dutchman. In the season 1951/52 he went through a difficult time. His wife Mary, whom he married in 1940, died, leaving him with four minor children. But he recovered and played such good football that, the magazine L'Equipe named him the best player of the season. De Harder in this season was second best league scorer with 25 goals. After five successful seasons in France, he returned to the Netherlands. He played in the season 1954/55 for Holland Sport. He ended his active career in 1957 in which he has achieved for the Girondins in 167 first division matches 76 matches. Even with 17 years Harder played for the first time in the Oranje Oranje. Only after he had returned from France, the now 35-year-old came again to three games. In Jeumont he was most recently manager of the municipal sports park, when he died in 1982 at age 62 after a heart attack.
