Gino Cappello was genius, but only (big) problem was the fact he played just when he wanted to play, similar like Blaž Slišković or Asim Ferhatović. Cappello would play 5 minutes and other 85 no. But those 5 minutes were worth more than someone's whole career. He had everything: Unfathomable dribbling, fantastic technique, strength and excellent passing range (especially long balls), good heading abilities and ferocious shot, he was good set piece taker and had explosive sudden bursts. After two seasons in Serie B with Padova, he landed in Serie A with Milan in 1940. In the three seasons at Milan he was always the second leading scorer unfortunately Milan was not a major contender then. At Bologna he came in the 1945/46 season where he played until the 1955/56 season. 245 appearances and 80 goals in the championship, played 11 games in the National 5/22/1949 debut in Italy-Austria 3 to 1, the first game of the post-Superga accident. Cappello also called IV, was an exceptional player. Discontinuous, sometimes overwhelming, technical resources out of the ordinary. He participated in two World Cup editions, in Brazil in 1950 and in Switzerland in 1954. It was during this World Cup which were allocated for the first time, the numbers of top players in a fix. Gino Cappello was given the number 10. Gino Cappello is also known for having had two life bans;once in 1952 in a summer game for punching a referee, he served 12 months of a suspension before being absolved. In 1958, when he was playing with Novara, he decided to quit having reached the age of forty. Some years later, stopped the activity of a player and became a manager for Genoa, hat was found guilty of attempted bribery, and suspended (this time without discount) for life. Gino Cappello died on 28/03/1990. |

Fascinating player. Here is my set: Spoiler: show Described by Sandro Ciotti & Nils Liedholm as the greatest Italian player of all time, in terms of raw skill. Tall & athletic, he drew comparisons to Cruyff for his elegance on the ball, shot accuracy, playmaking abilities & undefined position on the pitch (he would never decide if he was a CF or a Mezzala). His work rate however, was abysmal, and he seemed to disappear for most of the games he was in, only to magically create an opportunity or score a goal. A newspaper article would describe him as "divisive", "bizarre" and "born in the wrong time & place".
