This player with an extraordinary sense of dribbling and passing with millimeter precision was the heyday of Les Sauterelles for twenty years. He was a highly mobile and technical player, who had good dribbling, excellent handling of the ball and a powerful shot with his right foot. He wasn't a '9' to use because he left the striker position frequently and liked to associate with his attacking partners. Bickel excelled on the field in particular with cross and corner balls, subtle ball handling, amazing body deceptions and also with his rare consistency in performance and loyalty to the club. He was player with incredible technique, strong shot, quick move, and usually scored goal from solo run and long distance. He played as a forward for local club Grasshopper and the Switzerland national team, participacing with the latter in the World Cup finals of 1938 and 1950. He played 405 matches and scored 202 goals in the Swiss first division from 1935 to 1956, a period during which he won 7 league titles and 9 cup titles with Grasshopper. He was member of Swiss national team from 1936 to 1954,earning 71 caps and scoring 15 goals, including one in their first round victory over Nazi Germany in the 1938 World Cup. Bickel holds the World Cup record for the longest period between matches played (12 years,13 days), and is one of only two footballer ever to participate in World Cup before and after World War II, the other being Sweden's Erik Nilsson. |
