INFO:
Gunnar Thoresen was a very skillful, fast and technical attacking player with a vast repertoire in terms of body moves and dribbling skills. In addition to a good shot, he was also a good passer with a good eye for the game. Having lost the early years of his career because of World War II, Gunnar Thoresen was a late starter in international football, but once the hostilities ended, he went on to enjoy an excellent football career. Thoresen made his international debut as an outside-right against Denmark in 1946, in what was to become Norway's first post-war victory. Two weeks later, he scored a hat-trick in the 12-0 demolition of Finland, and firmly established himself as a regular on the national team. He added another hat-trick against the United States in 1948, and was a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Throughout the next decade, playing mostly as an inside-forward, Thoresen went on to win 64 caps, and scored 22 international goals. When he played his final international match, against Finland in the summer of 1959, he was aged 38 years and 342 days, making him the oldest player to have ever played for Norway. At the time of his retirement, he was in second place behind his longtime club-level nemesis Thorbjørn Svenssen on Norway's all-time appearance list.
At club level, Thoresen remained loyal to Larvik Turn for his entire career, and helped the club win the Norwegian league championship in 1953, 1955 and 1956. He was also the league's top scorer in 1953 and 1954, and scored a career total of 91 goals in the top division. Gunnar Thoresen also turned out to have good footballing genes, because two decades after his own career came to an end, he had the pleasure of watching is son Hallvar become a star player in Dutch football, and captain of Norway. Hallvar Thoresen went on to win 50 caps for his country, and with a combined total of 114 caps, the Thoresens held the distinction as Norway's most capped father/son combination for more than 30 years, until they were overtaken by Odd and Steffen Iversen) in 2007.
Gunnar Thoresen is still alive and well at age 90, and lives in Larvik. As of September 2010, he is believed to be the third-oldest living Norway international footballer, behind his former Larvik Turn teammate, goalkeeper Olav Førli who is Thoresen's senior by a single day, and former Sarpsborg winger Arne Eriksen who is 92 years old.
