Here is what I got about Vasco's "Expresso da Vitória" and Danilo's role in the team.

Trying to translate it:

Regarding WM's diagonals: "where there was no more the magic square formation but a parallelogram, Danilo positioned in the foremost apex of the midfielders line having as his duties to mark the opponent's playmaker and project himself beyond the midfield, meaning attacking. This way, becomimg an additional offensive option".

That's makes me think Danilo was more like a CMF than a DMF.

The book also register that he is the first player in Brazil that creates the need for an attacking player to also mark.
