BalancedINFO:Scarpato was a midfielder, at first an inside-forward but a half-back for most of his career, which began at Liguria, where he played a few Serie A matches between 1937 and 1941. He played more regularly for Spezia: 83 games and 11 goals between 1943 and 1948. In the middle a season at Biellese in 1945-46. His best period came when he joined Lucchese: 160 games and 8 goals from 1948 to 1953. His performances made him in notice for Italy and he was about to be called up to substitute the injured Eusebio Castigliano. However Castigliano recovered in time and Scarpato was never considered again. He retired in 1955 after short spells at Palermo and Spezia.
Scarpato had first-class technique, exceptional motor qualities and incredible temperament thanks to which he never gave up until the final whistle. Moreover he was unselfish teamworker, completely dedicated to help his teammates. A key player, his playstyle was various: he stayed in the back to defend or he advanced to build up the action or he pushed forward to be dangerous near or inside the box, either with the feet or the head. He was often one of the best in the team and it's strange that no big club ever tried to buy him.
