Bob McPhail was a very complete inside left known for his excellent scoring record, totalling 230 goals in 354 league games in the blue shirt. He was athletic, commanding, intelligent, skilled, basically everything you would want from an inside forward. While he is most famous for being Rangers top scorer for over 50 years until Ally McCoist overtook him, McPhail was also a good assist man and was always involved in attacking moves from the start to the end. He had a good jump, was quick, and strong enough to hold off defenders. He was also quick to react on rebounds and scored a good amount of goals in that way. He had very few weaknesses in his game, and although few of his qualities could be described as world class, he made full use of his abilities and was as such considered a world class player. Many would argue that he was the best inside forward to ever play in Scotland, and only Jimmy McGrory scored more goals in the Scottish top flight's entire 130-year history. He also scored 7 goals in 17 games for Scotland, including 2 in a 3-1 win over England in 1937, famous for being in front of the largest attendance in European footballing history. Bob McPhail is a Rangers legend that is still counted among the club's greatest legends almost 100 years since making his debut.
