Gastaldi was a left winger. He spent the majority of his career at Alessandria from 1929 to 1936 ─ excluding the 1931-32 season at Juventus, where he played only once ─ making 77 appearances and scoring 11 goals. He then played in Serie B for Pro Vercelli, Messina and Casale, retiring in 1939. Gastaldi had a good physique, was gifted with fine technique and most importantly tenacity as well as enthusiasm. He wasn't prolific but was the typical winger who combined quantity and quality but despite that his place in the first squad was often closed by the competition. Gifted with great speed, he was very hard to stop when he ran towards the goal. Praised for his simple but efficient playstyle, he liked challenging the defenders 1-on-1 looking to dribble them and passing or crossing the ball. However, he seemingly preferred surging to the center when he had enough space and deliver a powerful low shot, which he did well also on the run.
