INFO:Riley was a goalkeeper. He spent almost his entire career at Liverpool, making 338 appearances from 1925 to 1939. He was signed by the team as second choice for Elisha Scott. However, Riley took over the Irish as regular starter after four seasons. Scott had the chance to be the main keeper again in the early 1930s only due to Riley having a loss of form. He capped for South Africa twice previously to his transfer to Liverpool.
A notably tall goalkeeper, Riley was confident, calculating, extremely careful. He was distinguished for courage, reach, anticipation, remarkable handling of the ball, and agility despite his big physique. Helped by long arms and legs, he was always willing to do some spectacular saves to stop even dangerous long range drives, often resulting in the best save of the match. His best season was the 1935-36, when he set his personal 13 clean sheet record, beating the previous of 10 from 1929-30.
