INFO:
Hodgson was an inside-right and centre forward. His career began in the 1920s in his native country South Africa, where he capped for the South African national team twice in 1924. Two years later, he transferred to Liverpool, where he made 377 appearances in a decade, scoring an impressive 241 goals. He then played for Aston Villa and Leeds United from 1936 and 1939 before retiring. He capped for England 3 times in 1930-31, scoring once.
One of the greatest goalscorers in Liverpool's history, he was signed by the "Reds" after they noticed his unselfishness and excellent link-up play. He could move along the ground, starting in the half-back zone and reaching the forward line without dribbling or making true roaming movements. Despite the fact that he possessed a tall and strong physique, he didn't use to break through the defence unless it was necessary. Instead, he moved well on the offside line, showing opportunism, knowing the right moment to make a late run. He was exceptional on the ball, gifted with a terrific shot in either foot, excellent heading ability, good pace, close ball control, and decent ball distribution. His trademark was the ability to deliver great shots when running at full speed. Additionally, he was a good set piece taker as he scored some free kicks and 16 penalties.
